Tahuna dunes
In a nutshell this is what we will be looking at:
· Where do things live?
· Are there any issues with living on the dunes at Tahuna?
· Well then....what plants can manage to live there?
· How abundant are they / where are they distributed?
· What else might we need to measure to explain it all?
· What adaptations do they have to live in such a tough place?
AND....
Since we started doing this study Nelmac have sprayed the living daylights out of the marram
Do you wonder why?
Do you wonder what impact this has had on the sand dune community?
Can you explain what has happened?

Things we came up with in class:
Where do things live?.... these words cover it: adaptations, resources to use, tolerate hardships
Resources plants need: sun, water, carbon dioxide, nutrients
Hardships on the dunes:
lack of water in the sand, salt, wind, sand moving, light, lack of nutrients (humus), high temp
... guess we better measure these things as we record where the plants are, and are not
Our plants: spinifex, marram, pingao, lupin... best we get to know the difference too

A flipbook of the task can also
be found at the bottom of this page |
this video clip is worth a look, the dune bit starts about 1:50 in |

Or as a word doc.... Adatations webquest (Jeff's)
Do the dune plants seem to be growing at random... or are they only found in certain places (or zones) ?
... also nice pics of us at work (May 21, 2013) to use in your reports maybe
sand samples taken at 0, 15 and 30 m up the dunes
mixed with water for salt measurement (conductivity)... got the readings?
what is going on with the sample from 30m?

Also, what the heck did we find on the sand?
Is it the thing that made the tracks on the sand that I saw a few weeks ago ?
Thanks Nahuel.... it is a sand scarab read about it here
