Diving through the water column in Tasman Bay
Coutesy of Stew Robertson What do we notice about the clarity as we get ner the seabed? Why is that? |

Things you might (should) notice about these pics:
1 The German girls are swimming at French Pass, can you see their feet?
2 Me boating at Monaco, notice anything about the water?
3 A pic at the Monaco jetty, nice?
4 The Waimea Estuary, anything odd with the water? Heard of a salt wedge?
5 Our nice crystal clear stream (Jan.15, 2013)
6 The prop? remember the girls feet...... hmmmmm
7 This is water I got out of the creek, it's been sitting here for 10 days. Is it nice and clear? What do you see at the bottom?
8 And just in case you were wondering what those girls were doing....

TDC River flow data
Now lets look at the stream and river flows
www.tasman.govt.nz/my-region/environment/environmental-data/river-flow/
We have previously measured the amount of sediment in our stream when it was in flood (we filtered it)
Link to data here We found approx. 3 g/L or... 3 Kg/m3 .... do some maths...
Image from big complicated research paper:
www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmars.2020.557360/full What is the take home message, and how does that relate to the stuff above And for the experts among us this article shows how real researchers go about their work and writing it up |
The following articles / reports are pretty much vital for understanding why we are doing our investigation and then relating our findings to the science ideas... but there are way more than you will get thru... scan and choose the best
An article worth considering

From 2013...
A nifty bit of research by Plymouth University just popped up on twitter... we might be able to be part of this global project
check the pics below for a bit of an idea... then (someone from each group) install the app on your smartphone
Thanks Brianna... (uploaded some of our data )
